New big-man talks serious Terps interestDan Painter

A phrase we hear from time to time is 'dream school,' which recruits occasionally use to describe a school which they have a particular affection for.
We don't hear it as often as we would like when it comes to Maryland, but Josh Henderson has a history with the school, which began back in the 70s, when his dad, David Henderson, played for the Terps and Coach Lefty Driesell.
TT spoke to Henderson recently to find out more about his game and his future plans on the hardwood.
"This was a big summer for me," said Henderson. "I played AAU ball with East Coast Fusion, and it enabled me to travel all over the country, and to really be tested in terms of playing great competition.
"In high school (Cave Spring HS, Roanoke, VA), there's no one my size to go up against. I had been playing with a smaller, more regional type AAU program, but Fusion allowed me to travel and to play in some really nice venues. The competition allowed me to see where I stand against good big men in the country. I think I held up pretty well."
Henderson gave TT an insight as to his game and his skills.
"I consider myself an "up and down" type player," said Henderson. "I really like to run the floor. I think I can beat a lot of big guys down the floor and convert before they can set up and defend me. My back-to-the-basket game is coming along, and will get better as I get stronger.
"I think I can play in either the high and low post. I see the court well, and pass well out of the post. As a shooter, I am comfortable at the free throw line area, but actually, I have pretty decent three point range.
"On occason, I will drift out and knock down a trey, but I try and pick my spots when I do that. At 6-11, and 230 lbs, the coaches obviously want me a little closer to the bucket."
Henderson, a 3.5 GPA student, has seen his recruiting start to blow up since the July evaluation period ended.
"In the past year, my parents took me to a number of schools to make some unofficial visits. I went to William & Mary, Richmond, Virginia, Davidson, Wake Forest, and James Madison. I just wanted to get an early look at some campuses, and to gain a little more information on the various schools, especially those in proximity to Roanoke," said Henderson.
Henderson is well on his way to developing a game plan for his recruitment, with some new schools entering the picture after his impressive July.
"I've already decided on three schools I am going to officially visit," said Henderson. "Wake Forest recently made me a formal offer, so they will get a visit. I'm also going to visit Davidson, since they've shown me a lot of attention for quite awhile now. The third visit will be to Virginia. They haven't yet offered me, but I think they might offer during my visit. That leaves me two more, and they will come from Cincinnati, Vanderbilt, Penn State, and Maryland. Cincy, Vanderbilt and Penn State have all made formal offers."
As for Maryland?
"Well, Coach (Chuck) Driesell made me an offer, but I guess technically it's not a formal offer," said Henderson. "I owe them a phone call, and I am supposed to be talking to Coach (Gary) Williams real soon. When the head coach makes the offer, then it's considered the real thing.
"I've been to Maryland before. My dad used to take me up there when I was younger for Midnight Madness. He still plays occasionally in the Alumni Game. I think he played up there a couple years ago.
"I can't really say that I have any real favorite school at the moment. I will know more after the visits are taken. Growing up, my dream school was definitely Maryland. But I am going into this with an open mind. They are all good schools. If Maryland makes a formal offer though, I would have to seriously consider them."
Henderson has no favorite college player, but he admires Tyler Hansbrough.
"I have to respect him for the way he plays. He's so intense. I play hard, too, but I understand I have to get stronger. That's an area where I can improve.
"I have been lifting with the football team at high school. I think I have really good skills, and I am a good athlete. I'm only 17, so I haven't yet fully matured physically. So, getting stronger is my number one goal at the moment," said Henderson.
Henderson has yet to decide on a major, but is considering engineering.
"Right now I just want to get my final two visits set up, and then I will make my choice and sign in November."
