www.roanoke.com/sports/college/wb/244970 Abele 1st Warrior sent to Radford U.By Doug Doughty Oak Hill Academy boys basketball coach Steve Smith recently experienced a first, and he doesn't get many of those after 25 seasons. Smith has produced dozens of elite college players, many of whom still play in the NBA, but he had never sent a player to Radford University until 7-foot-1, 290-pound Martins Abele. "That's [Radford] the closest Division I school to us," Smith said. "We're happy to have a Highlander." Appalachian State's campus in Boone, N.C., is only 32 miles from Oak Hill in Mouth of Wilson, but Radford is the closest Division I program in Virginia. "They haven't recruited down here much," Smith said. "I remember [ex-Radford coach] Ron Bradley was down here, but a lot of years we'll have six or seven high Division I kids, and the rest will be Division II and III players." Abele, from Latvia by way of Blue Ridge School outside of Charlottesville, is one of two spring signees for the Highlanders. Coach Brad Greenberg also announced the signing of 6-8, 205-pound Jonathan Edwards from Queens, N.Y., and Tyler (Texas) Junior College. Abele averaged 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds for Oak Hill, where he played 11 minutes per game. He also took visits to Manhattan and UNC Asheville and canceled a trip to Maryland-Eastern Shore. "He's a wide body and he will protect the lane," Smith said. "The main thing with Martins is, he needs to lose 30 pounds. He'd play five or six minutes for us and he'd take himself out." * The top returning scorer for Oak Hill is |6-2 shooting guard Keith Hornsby, who already has committed to UNC Asheville for 2011. Hornsby, originally from Williamsburg, Va., is the son of singer and songwriter Bruce Hornsby. "He was our best 3-point shooter," said Smith, noting that Hornsby was 31-of-69 on 3-pointers this past season. "Listen, he can play. He's not just on the team because his dad can play the piano."

So what does everyone think about the recruiting class? I think it went just about as well as it could on paper. A local walk on with some skill, a monster for a new center, highly skilled pg with a TON of upside, a stud in Doumbe, and a wild card with Edwards.

I think it's a pretty good recruiting class. I hope Masse makes a immediate impact, along with Jareal. Coach Steve Smith was right, I think if Martins loses about 30 pounds he could be a real special player. What year would Edwards be classified under? Junior?

yeah both edwards and masse will be juniors. with our team being so young, hopefully they step up and take leadership roles.
i think its a solid class......if you look at the incoming class, its a mirror image of what left....amir -> jareal....pmart -> masse.....joey -> edwards......art -> abele....cole ->allen. definitely some big shoes to fill, but they all have the potential to do so.
I expect jareal, masse, and edwards to contribute next year. i agree with knvb that abele might get a redshirt, especially if he doesnt get into shape this offseason.

Is Dickerson going to be a classified as a Sophomore? A freshman, he went to a prep school just like a lot of other HS players.

Yesterday was the last day of the regular signing period, and as far as I can tell, nobody else signed with us, so I'm guessing, as far as high school players are concerned, we have our recruiting class finished. I guess there is still the possibility of a juco signing sometime over the summer, or possibly the announcement of another signing in the next few days (doubtful), but overall I like how this class looks a lot!
