another article on faulkner.....
Faulkner says yes to Radford
Justin Young Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting
Evan Faulkner, a 6-foot-1 combo guard from Elliott County (Ky.) High School, verbally committed to Radford last week.
Faulkner said he built a strong bond with head coach Brad Greenberg and looks forward to playing at the Big South Conference school next year.
"The coaches and I really developed a good relationship. When I went there on my visit, I felt a real good comfort level there with the college and the whole community," Faulkner said. "It's a good college town. I felt like it was the right decision to make."
The Bluegrass State star has the tools to play both backcourt positions and that versatility, Faulkner says, should give the team an advantage as he meshes with the post players.
"He's going to have me play the point guard and hopefully I'll make the smooth transition from the shooting guard to the point guard," Faulkner said. "They have one of the best frontcourts in college basketball and from talking to him, they need some shooters. Hopefully I can help them with that and take some of the double teams off the big guys."
Faulkner wasn't the only player to commit Radford last week. West Jefferson (N.C.) Ashe County forward Tommy Spagnolo also pledged to the program. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evan sounds real happy to be a Highlander. I know knvb141 will be happy to have a new point guard lol.

hey amir johnson is only a junior and i think this is where he has a breakout season and makes the all big south team. you heard it here first!
as far as evan, i've seen him as a two star recruit on some scouting services, sounds like a good ballplayer. i've heard brad greenberg is pretty darn excited about both signings.

heres an article on Tommy Spagnolo.... www.roanoke.com/sports/college/wb/181435Highlanders pluck big man from hillsDoug Doughty After 34 seasons as a basketball coach in the mountains of North Carolina, Marc Payne can see how players from his region often get overlooked. Radford University thinks 6-foot-7 Tommy Spagnolo will be a case in point. Spagnolo is one of two players who have committed to the Highlanders for 2009, joining 6-1 Evan Faulkner, a combination point and shooting guard from Elliott County High School in Sandy Hook, Ky. Spagnolo averaged 18 points and eight rebounds last year for Ashe County High School in West Jefferson, N.C. Spagnolo, a starter since the beginning of his sophomore year, has 128 blocked shots in his career. Ashe County returns 11 of the top 12 players from a team that went 23-5 in 2007-08. Payne said Spagnolo also had Division I offers from Elon and USC Upstate, formerly the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg. Ricky Hall, the Radford assistant with chief responsibility for Spagnolo, shares a connection with Payne to former Coastal Carolina coach Russ Bergman. Spagnolo also worked with former Virginia Tech head coach Bobby Hussey. Both Spagnolo and Faulkner are known for their shooting. For his career, Spagnolo has shot 60 percent from the field and 76 percent from the line, and he has range out to 15-18 feet. "He's played post most of the time," said Payne, a 1974 Emory and Henry graduate. "He's done a little bit of everything."

found a new prospect....Tyshawn Patterson Stetson in pursuit of OCP guard Tyshawn Pattersonposted by Buddy Collings on Oct 13, 2008 9:09:58 AM Orlando Christian Prep forward Keith Clanton is the reigning Sentinel area Player of the Year and state Class 1A MVP, but he's not the only senior on his team who is being recruited. Warriors guard Tyshawn Patterson appears to be the No. 1 recruiting target for Stetson University of DeLand. Patterson, an ultra-quick 6-foot-2 senior, visited Jacksonville last weekend. A coach from Radford University is scheduled to be on campus to meet Patterson Tuesday. North Florida and Florida Atlantic have already made campus stops. "Stetson loves him. They're the ones that have recruited him the hardest," OCP Coach Reggie Kohn said Monday. "Tyshawn is not sure whether or not he's going to sign early or late but things are looking good." __________________________________ from an article on rivals... OCP finished last season with a 27-2 record and should be the favorite to repeat again as state champions. Shooting guard Tyshawn Patterson is another senior who will likely be playing at the next level. "Tyshawn is getting some looks from lower mid-majors," Kohn said. "He continues to be patient and is just trying to find the right school for him. The biggest school on him right now is Stetson. Stetson loves him. He's getting looks from FAU, Jacksonville, Radford, North Florida and East Tennessee State." __________________________________ heres a vid of him www.googsports.tv/googsports/DesktopModules/UltraVideoGallery/UltraVideoGallery.swf?vId=37&portalId=0

Weve got E. Hall leaving at the end of this year and Art, Joey, and Phillip Martin gone next year. so with either 1 or 2 scholarships left, I would assume Greenberg & Co will be targeting a big man? maybe they are holding out for jamelle hagins?

I'd love for us to be able to develop another big while we have our studs in the post but its going to be hard to get a kid w/ talent to come and sit for two years....most likely that would be a target for next year?
That being said what do you guys think of the three we have grabbed? 1 1STAR 1 2STAR and 1 3STAR (depending on the publication. Are you guys happy with who we are bringing in? How does it compare to what other Big South schools are pulling this year?

I'm happy with the recruits. Although, I would really like to get Jamelle Hagins and Troy Daniels (if we have the schollys available).
Nowadays, mid-majors have as good of a chance of getting two star/three star recruits as majors do.

If we get some big men in the 09 class, they will only be sitting 1 year (next year) with the opportunity to learn under big art and joey, and will start in 2010. big art and joey will be gone after next year. as of now our big men for the 2010 season would be lazar and spagnolo, i see both of them as more so small forwards, maybe spagnolo at the power forward. if we wait to till next year to only get big men in the 2010 class, we will lack a lot of depth at the 4 and 5 positions, likely having a freshman start at the 5.

In the Big South it's not totally necessary to have a dominant big man. While, yes it helps, this league is more known for it's guards and small forwards in recent years. Big Art and Joey should - should being the key word - present a matchup problem for many opposing teams. By then we'll have McFarlin, Lazar, Spags and probably two other big men available (really, really, really hoping we get Hagins) to play in the frontcourt. We'll have a bevy of true guards and then a group of swingmen that can play the 2/3. Given any indication on the recruiting job Greenberg and staff have done, I think we'll be okay.

Fresh,
Agree the Big South doesn't have a lot of "big men" but that's not by choice, its a necessity. If we can continue this momentum of bringing in effective guys on both end of the floor that's a leg up on the competition and imo should be a priority.
