With a loss to Wake Forest and a win vs Central Penn there is not much to take away from those outcomes. However, watching the games, I do like what I see from a young team. Our newcomers have looked pretty good and brought some things we have missed in years past. I believe Phillips and Holland are the most skilled big men we have had since Joey and Art. We havent had a chance to see Bolstad yet, so the depth we have there is something we havent had in a while either. Cooper and Bradford have looked good handling the ball. Bradford had one bad turnover where his pocket got picked, but he has shown a knack of getting to the rim and scoring in the half court and on the break which is something we haven't always had. Cooper looks quick with the ball and has shown a nice shooting touch. The key here is for these guys to stay healthy and out of foul trouble, it really sucks that Carlik Jones is ineligible this season. The depth and his ability to score would be a great asset. At the 2 guard spot, Cousin is playing well, would be nice to see a little more consistency, but he can light it up at times. Tanner has improved his ball handling and defense and taken the ball nicely to the goal and can still shoot the lights out. He will score a lot of points this year. Donald Hicks is ready to contribute and will not look like a freshman by years end. At the forward spots, Polite was solid vs Wake and took a few more jump shots than last year. He is gonna be a weapon, and if he can knock down that shot, will be our best player. Sterling Christy is just a guy you like to have out there, has size, athleticism, and makes plays that dont always jump out on the stat sheet. Lutete shows an ability to shoot the 3, but not always consistent, does rebound pretty well. With Williams coming back, it will be interesting to see who's minutes he cuts into.
We will take some lumps in the out of conference season, but I firmly believe this is a team that is built to compete and win in the Big South. I have a little concern about our depth at guard, especially at the point. But other than that, I predict this team will have our best Big South record under Coach Jones and go further in the conference tournament than any of his former teams. We have guys that will give the Big South a lot of problems from a lot of different spots.
