Oliver, McIntyre carry Radford
Campbell makes several runs at Radford, but the Highlanders hang on to win their home opener.
RADFORD -- Chris Oliver had 28 points and 19 rebounds to lead Radford to an 87-80 win over nonconference foe Campbell on Saturday night in the Highlanders' home opener.
Oliver hit 9-of-19 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the stripe, while blocking five shots for the Highlanders. Radford held a 19-7 edge in second-chance points as Oliver grabbed seven of the Highlanders' 13 offensive boards. Oliver's 19 rebounds were one shy of the school's single-game record.
The teams traded points until the 7:53 mark of the first half when Reggie McIntyre scored five straight on a field goal and 3-pointer that initiated a 9-0 run, giving Radford some breathing room. The Highlanders pushed the lead out to 12 on several occasions, but the Camels refused to fold and by halftime trailed 46-36 following a pair of free throws by Ruell Pringle.
Radford (2-5) used a 13-2 run midway through the first half to open its double-figure lead. McIntyre had five points in the burst, while Oliver scored four of his 15 first-half points as Radford turned a 25-24 deficit into a 37-27 advantage over a 3:28 span. The Highlanders held an 11-1 edge in second-chance points in the first 20 minutes and held the Camels to their lowest-scoring half of the season.
The Camels (3-1) opened the second half with a 13-4 run. Junior Jamaal Dixon, playing in his first game as a Highlander, broke the drought with a jumper, but Pringle's layup and successive free throw, followed by a layup by Ledell Eackles off Pringle's steal and outlet pass pulled Campbell to 50-49.
Dixon, a transfer who sat out all of last season, has been hampered this season with an ankle injury. He finished with seven points.
"It's good to see Jamaal out on the floor," Radford coach Byron Samuels said. "He's still not himself, he's not as aggressive as he will be for us."
With the lead trimmed to one, McIntyre scored four straight buckets to cap a 14-4 Radford flurry and the Highlanders led 68-57 with 7:10 to go.
The Camels twice pared the margin to four in the last 2:20, but McIntyre and Oliver each hit buckets at the end of the shot clock in the last 1:25 and the Highlanders made five of six free throws in the last 23 seconds.
"Campbell's a team that runs and we were able to withstand their runs," Radford coach Byron Samuels said.
McIntyre added 17 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Amir Johnson had 14 points and seven assists for the Highlanders.
Jonathan Rodriguez led Campbell with season highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds. Pringle added 23 points and four assists for the Camels, who made just 16-of-26 free throws and were outrebounded 50-38.
It was the first matchup between the teams since 1994.
