The Highlanders are 5-10 could be better, could be worse; for the most part I'm pleased with where they are.
It's been a pretty big year for the Big South with a glut of teams picking up wins against major programs. Radford should've came out of Air Force with a 'w', but showed they could stick with a team that usually is in the tourney.
The win @ Gardner-Webb - a squad that beat Kentucky @ Kentucky this season - in overtime allowed us to see how much character this Radford team has.
Below I have posted their projected Big South records, followed by what my expectations would be if they finished with that record and what kinda projected seed they would have in the Big South tourney.
9-5 - successful season (good enough for 3-4 seed)
7-7 - realistic (good enough for 4-6 seed)
5-9 - dissapointing season (good enough for 6-8 seed)
Backcourt
Obviously the backcourt is what the Highlanders live-and-die by and so far they've had a good season.
>Kenny Thomas - the breakout season is upon us (avg. 15.6 ppg, 42% 3-pt shooter).
>Martell McDuffy - continues to play solid D and his offensve has improved fastly (avg. 14.7 ppg this season).
>Amir Johnson - will take his game to another level come Big South play. You heard it here first. (avg. 13.2 ppg, 82 assists).
>Cole Wilder - I'm impressed with his play and the minutes he's getting. Has proved he's a solid back-up point.
Frontcourt
The frontcourt is getting there. A lot of people don't realize the Highs have played opponents featuring some of the best post players in the nation.
>Joey Lynch-Flohr - Very gritty player who will rank up there in Big South power forwards. (avg. 11.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg).
>Eric Hall - Very athletic, versatile player. Can score from inside and even from outside (btw, his first career FG attempt was a made 3-ptr). I'm glad he's back this year he's going to finish out to have a good career @ RU. (4.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 15 blocks).
>Jamar Jenkins - More minutes he gets, better this guy will become. Very athletic and can play multiple positions. (3.7 ppg).
>Duane Ricks - Would love to see him get more PT and when he's in there for him to look for his shot.
Coaching
I think Brad Greenberg has done an admirable job thus far. Seems like he has the kids buying into his system and they like playing for him. Of course we would all love to see results right away, but we're on the right track. The Highs have had a tough schedule, but it will no doubt help them down the road.
Greenberg has built an excitement up with the athletics program and it seems like he is leading us in the right direction.
