RADFORD, Va. – Radford University men’s basketball coach Brad Greenberg announced Friday afternoon that Rick Hall has been named as an assistant men’s basketball coach. Hall, who brings a wealth of coaching experience to RU, joins the Highlander program after four years of working with Greenberg at Virginia Tech.
Hall’s duties at Radford, which will begin immediately, include assisting with all aspects of the program, including recruiting, practice and game preparation and opponents scouting.
“Rick Hall is an outstanding person and an outstanding basketball man,” Greenberg said. “I’m excited beyond words that he will be a part of Radford basketball, and I’m extremely confident that everyone associated with Radford University will quickly come to realize how fortunate we are to have him as a Highlander.”
Hall spent the previous four seasons with Virginia Tech men’s basketball, including the last three as Director of Men’s Basketball Operations. Hall had wide-ranging duties with Virginia Tech, including assisting with on-campus recruiting and overseeing the Hokies’ video system. He also served as camp director for Seth Greenberg Basketball Camps.
Hall joined the Hokies after serving as the head boys basketball coach at William Fleming High School for two years. In that time, he led the program to the regional state tournament. It was his second stint with the Colonels, as he had been an assistant coach with the school in the 1988-89 season, when they reached the state semifinals. While working for Flemming, he also served as a radio color commentator for the NBDL’s Roanoke Dazzle.
“Rick’s experience and reputation in Southwest Virginia and the New River Valley greatly enhances our efforts to make RU basketball an elite Big South Conference team,” Greenberg said.
Before returning to Virginia, Hall coached in the Continental Basketball Association with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Oklahoma City Cavalry and the Shreveport Storm from 1994 to 1999. In those five years, 20 players that he coached were called up by the NBA. He spent the 1994-95 season in Shreveport as an assistant coach and Director of Player Personnel, and was promoted to head coach for the 1995-96 season. Hall coached in the CBA finals as an assistant during his last three CBA seasons, winning one championship in 1997 with Oklahoma City.
Hall also brings with him knowledge of the Big South Conference, having served as an assistant at Big South rival Coastal Carolina in 1993-94. He also was an assistant at nearby Roanoke College from 1989-93. Hall began his coaching in 1983, spending five years as an assistant at Roanoke’s Cave Spring High School before his first stint at William Fleming. Hall played basketball for Ferrum Junior College, for the 1978-79 season. He then transferred to Virginia Tech, joining the Hokies on a football scholarship and earning a varsity letter in 1979.
Hall excelled in three sports, football, basketball and track as a student-athlete at Cave Spring High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing education from Virginia Tech in 1983. Hall resides in Christiansburg with his wife, the former Cherri Shortt, whom he married last summer.
