BreakdownWelcome back to another season of Radford Highlanders basketball. The Highs are fresh off their second Big South Conference tournament title and are entering the 2009-10 season with high expectations, despite a few missing bodies. As we have watched closely in the offseason, keep an eye on who gets the bulk of the minutes at the two spot. The departed Kenny Thomas will be sorely missed, but coach Brad Greenberg has a plethora of options to try and fill the void of one of Radford's all-time prolific scorers. Last year Navy defeated Radford in an overtime match-up which saw 61 fouls during action. The Midshipmen are always a gritty group and while they have the speed advantage, Radford's tall towers and frontcourt presence should overmatch the Mids. PredictionRadford 69 Navy 56

ahhhhhhh, finally college basketball season!!
once again, great job with the overview fresh.
I'm thinking Blake Smith will get the start at the 2 with Ev Faulkner 1st man off the bench. I cant wait to see how many minutes all of the freshmen get. Im sure Curry will get E-Hall minutes while Laz is out.
im going 67-60 RU. Art dominates and shows why he will be back to back BSC POY & the first ever BSC NBA Draft pick.

I've been efforting ways to spruce up the board and hopefully running a RU hoops site to go along with the forum. We'll see. I have a close friend that works on the Navy Yard, went to Maryland, his name is Brad. Good dude. I'm always up there for Nationals games.

From the Tartan

Do you know what happens on Nov. 13? If you’re reading this column and you don’t, well, I’m disappointed. That said, please continue reading; someone has to pull you out from under the rock (more like boulder) you’re living under.
Radford University opens the men’s basketball season at home against the United States Naval Academy. Duh. The same Navy they lost to 73-71 in overtime at Annapolis, Md. last year. But that was before they were the defending Big South Conference champs.
For anyone who wasn’t there the day RU earned a bid to the NCAA tournament, it was an emotional rollercoaster of a game that resulted in a sea of red storming the Dedmon Center court. Highlander fans bear-hugged one another and screamed themselves hoarse, arms flailing and bodies hopping up and down. It was a display of school pride not seen at RU since the 1998 men’s basketball team accomplished the same feat.
But, sad as it may be, the time to exult is over– at least for the team. It’s the fans’ job to exult all the time And the fans’ job starts this Friday.
The campus has a lot to cheer for this basketball season. The Highs are predicted to finish first in the Big South by a number of organizations, including the Big South coaches and media panel, as well as Basketball Times. Reigning Big South Player of the Year Art Parakhouski was named the preseason MVP, adding to the hype the team hopes will translate into a big turnout for the first of many home games.
In the Highs’ first game following winter break last season, RU fans came out in full force with numbers not seen in years. Head Coach Brad Greenberg said the only time he’d seen that many fans in the Dedmon Center was when the team played West Virginia University earlier that season. And that time, the red seats were swallowed by a swamp of blue and yellow. That’s something that should never happen again.
Not only should the home floor be packed with red shirts, but there should be caravans of Highlander fans making the trek down to Duke over Thanksgiving break. A lot of you should also be taking a peek at plane ticket prices to Kansas and filling your gas tanks for trips to Durham, N.C. and Louisville, K.Y. That’s right, in case you hadn’t heard this either, the Highs will battle preseason #1 Kansas University, #8 Duke and #14 University of Louisville this year. They play three of the top 20 teams in the country. Three of them. Get pumped.
And the best part is the Highs actually have a shot at some of those teams. The front court lineup of Parakhouski, Joey Lynch-Flohr, and Lazar Trifunovic (once he recovers from his injury) is considered to be one of the most imposing group of big men in the NCAA, and will prove to be difficult for even the most athletic teams to control. That, and the influx of talented freshmen like guard Blake Smith, a potential starter, gives the Highs the ability to stretch the floor on offense. The team will be better than last year. But the real question is: will the fans compare? Turn the Dedmon Center into a sea of red… no excuses.

Amir isn't starting, he's suspended for the first two games.
Dunno if that's been posted. Also, the Turkish guys are out fo 10 games as per NCAA rules.

Where did you hear the 2 game suspension for Amir? Sonmez has a 6 game suspension....his first game is Kansas...Cerrah is still awaiting a ruling last I heard....but he is probably redshirting regardless.

Oh ok, I talked to someone about Amir, and the 10 games was a speculation from the same person.

we need to have a healthy amount of swagger until we get this team to full strength. we can still win some of these non-conference games without Laz. Hopefully Tommy Spags comes up big.
I'm sure Cole/Faulkner can handle the point for just two games.
I don't want to come out flat, sounds like campus is paying attention this year according to Klep and Jeff.
