Santoine Butler to Gardner-Webb www.d1spects.com/basketball/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=638:justin-young&catid=910:front-page-rotator The Butler did it
Written by Justin Young Tuesday, 17 November 2009 10:45 After leaving Augusta for his senior year to go to Oldsmar Christian in Florida, Augusta native Santoine Butler learned something about what he wants in college. Over the weekend, he found what he was looking for. Butler visited Gardner-Webb officially last weekend and decided he was ready to end his recruitment and sign in the early period, according to his Team Truth coach Curtis Wheeler. The selling point was distance from home. Butler wanted to be closer to his Augusta home. Gardner-Webb provided that. “He visited this past weekend and he thought about it and what was important to him,” Wheeler said. “Distance, playing time and the fact that they wanted him was important…His dad wanted to watch him play and it’s only three hours from home.” Butler gives the Big South program an athletic block to block presence and a player that can play well above the rim. Wheeler said Butler should fit well into Gardner-Webb’s style of play. Getting on the floor as a freshman was a major selling point, too. “Main thing is playing time. He’ll have a chance to play a lot of minutes as a freshman and that is what he was looking for,” Wheeler said. Radford, USC Upstate, Coastal Carolina, South Carolina State and Tennessee-Martin were players for his signature late in the game. Gardner-Webb’s longevity in the process that beat the competition for Butler’s signature. “They did a good job of recruiting him for a year. They didn’t go let’s just get a big guy,” Wheeler said. “They developed a relationship with his former high school coach, his current coach, his father, with me. They good job overall getting to know everyone sometime of relationship with Santoine.”

savannahnow.com/sports/2009-11-17/johnsons-smith-signs-d-i-radfordJohnson's Smith signs to D-I RadfordJohnson High's Jareal Smith, with his mother, Veronica Green, next to him and his coaches and teammates behind, signs his college letter of intent to play at Radford University next year. Advertisement By Rich McGowan With his mother at his side, coaches and teammates behind and him and a library full of classmates looking on, Jareal Smith secured his future Monday morning. The Johnson High senior signed his college letter of intent to play basketball at Division I's Radford University. "It felt good," Smith said of signing. "It put a big smile on my face. Coach Holder put everything together, brought everybody out to support me. I loved it." Johnson coach Marty Holder, entering his first season since being hired from Southeast Bulloch, said he has already seen what makes Smith a Division I-caliber player. "His scoring ability is amazing right now," Holder said. "...To me, he is much better a passer than a scorer. This kid finds people in places and in spots. I'm about to yell in practice because I'm thinking he missed him and, low and behold, he finds them and they score. It makes everybody's job a little easier." Last season, Smith averaged 17 points a night and was a second team Savannah Morning News All-Greater Savannah selection. He led the Atomsmashers to a 10-15 record last season, including a berth in Class AAAAA playoffs. Smith signed with a program that opens the 2009-10 season as the defending Big South Champion. The Highlanders went 21-12 last season and made the NCAA Tournament, losing to North Carolina in the first round. "The coach, Brad Greenburg, told me I had a great chance of starting at point guard," Smith said. "My mom and I, we talked, and talked, and talked and thought about it, and we came up with the decision that I needed to take advantage of the opportunity he was giving." Smith's mother, Veronica Green, said Monday's signing was the culmination of her son's hard work. "It's very exciting," Green said. "I'm very nervous, but it's a big accomplishment just to see him be able to sign and go somewhere he wants to go." Before Smith goes on to the next level, Holder said the 6-foot-3 point guard has some work to do. "I know defensively he's going to have to step it up just a little because at the next level the guys are a little bigger, a little stronger and faster," Holder said. "...He's going to be playing the best player on the floor and he has to step it up defensively. Offensively, scoring-wise and his basketball IQ, it's all there already."

I'm not sure basketball was being played in the video....running up and down like that the big man never really had a chance to get in the flow.....I'm interested to see what bigs we are going after other than the two that we know of.
