RADFORD, Va. – Radford University men’s basketball coach Byron Samuels resigned Thursday, effective at the end of the 2006-07 academic year. Samuels, who is entering his fifth year at the helm of the Highlanders, cited personal and professional reasons in his resignation.
“Today I am announcing that this will be my final year as the head men’s basketball coach of the Radford University men’s basketball team. My decision is based on a number of personal and professional reasons. Also I want to allow the university as much time as possible to find a new head coach,” Samuels said in a prepared statement.

“We thank Coach Samuels for his service and we appreciate the advance notice that he has given us on this decision,” Radford President Penelope W. Kyle said in s statement Thursday. “Radford University basketball has always stood for excellence in the classroom and on the court. A proven history of success in these areas will be the guiding principle in searching for RU’s next head men’s basketball coach. A national search will begin immediately.”
“We wish Coach Samuels and his family the very best as he moves forward with his career.”
Radford opens the 2006-07 regular season Friday, Nov. 10 at Milwaukee-Wisconsin.
