Alright, the Highlanders are 7-2 through the first round of Big South action. I have been reading and listening to a few games and a few things concern me regarding this team.
1. Defending the 3. - Seems we let teams rain 3 pointers on us. 2. Turnovers - Do we not have a true PG to take care of the ball? 3. Free Throws - What the hell? That was just ugly against Liberty. Are we always this poor of a free throw shooting team?
Anyways, like I said, I dont follow this team as close I would like to and dont know if those three things have hurt us all year or just in the games that I have had the pleasure to watch and or listen to.
With a week off before we take on the second half of our Big South schedule what three things would you want the team work on the most during the off week?
GO RU!

1. I'm not sure what the past two games have done to the statistics but prior to the past week we had the best shooting % defense in the conference. The 3 teams that are chuckers are G Webb, Liberty, & VMI easily our toughest games so far. These teams all start 4 or 5 guards and can all shoot. We have used the 1-3-1 zone as our base defense which has holes (or at least ours does) that has not worked. Others on the board have suggested a 2-3 defense.
2. Technically we have a true point guard. Amir is 5' 9" and has ran the point for 2 plus seasons now. He has his ups and downs but his one constant is his turnovers. He's averaging over 3 a game. Unacceptable. I think part of the problem is that he plays too many minutes. Austin or Wilder should be getting at least 4 minutes a game at stratigic times to keep Amir fresh but all excuses aside his TO's are unacceptable.
3. While we are not a great FT shooting team we are also not horrible. Big Art and JLF shoot around 70% and KT shoots around 80. I felt that we were rushing our shots on Saturday. If we hit at a higher clip we win Saturday w/o having to go to OT.
The 3 things I would want them to work on are
1. Turnovers 2. Getting an 8th body in the rotation.....most notebly a point guard. 3. Getting the ball down low. Its our bread and butter and we go as far as Joey and Art can take us.

Are we always this poor of a free throw shooting team? 1. One weakness of the 1-3-1 zone defense is the corner/baseline three point opportunity. So while we have the inside clogged up and usually the top of the perimeter, we can vulnerable to the sides. When you run the 1-3-1 with athletic players, they can get to the open holes faster ... but they are more likely to give up offensive rebounds. With JLF/Art down low we can get the boards. 2. We really have one point guard and Amir does so many things right, it usually overshadows the wrong. He's the iron man, rarely getting any time to rest. He's one of the all-time leaders in assists at RU and leads the Big South currently. Austin hasn't gotten many minutes, Wilder neither, and McEachin is slowly being worked into the point from time-to-time. With McDuffy gone, our guard depth isn't where it should be. 3. The horrendous free throw shooting is unacceptable and I'm sure they are working hard on it this week. Defense and free throws win championships, so I hope they are working on getting that improved.
