The 2008-09 season was a great one for Colonial Beach shooting guard Tristan Carey. His Drifters basketball team defeated Eastern Montgomery 77-75 to win the Division I state championship. Carey scored 21 points in the second half to lead a rally that erased a 6-point halftime deficit.
"It's one of the biggest games of my career," said Carey who is best know as T.T to his friends. "I was nervous but I fought thru it. I told the guys we got to take over and win the state championship in our last year. It's a great feeling."
With the score tied at 72, and the state championship on the line, Carey hit a short jump shot to give Colonial Beach a two-point lead with 19 seconds remaining. He finished with a game-high 37 points and he grabbed 16 rebounds.
The championship was a perfect ending to one of the greatest individual scoring performances in Virginia public school history. Carey averaged an amazing 29.5 points per game while being voted the Region A Player of the Year.
During the three game Region A playoff tournament, Carey averaged a blistering 42.3 points per game. He scored 39 against Charles City, 46 against Surry, and his 42 points against Franklin in the championship game was half his teams total. T.T also averaged 22 points as a junior.
When you consider every defense was designed to stop him, Carey's point total was off the charts. He's a scorer that can slash to the basket, or pull up from anywhere on the floor for a jumper. He dunks in transitions, and he can shoot the three. The ability to create his own shot is a strength and he pushes the ball at full speed down court for lay-ups.
The biggest knock on Carey is the level of competition he faced in Single A and his shot selection at times was questionable but there's no doubt he's a big time player with a college future.
Is there a spot at a D-1 college for a Single A basketball star? Carey believes there is. "When people come up and talk to me or my coach after the game they tell me I'm a D-1 player," Carey said. "I think I proved to people (during the tournament) that I'm a Division I player."
Colonial Beach head coach Steve Swopes says he has received contact from at-least 10 schools since the start of the tournament including Virginia Commonwealth, Norfolk State, Stetson, Radford, and Morgan State.
