Horizon League All Conference Honors:
Marcus Ottey – First Team
Ottey is a 6’2 guard who led the team as a Sophomore last season with 14.6 points per game. Ranked in the top ten of the Horizon League for field goals, free throws, and 3 point percentage.
Tarkus Ferguson – Second Team
Ferguson joined Ottey as a double-digit scorer as a Sophomore with 10.6 points per game. Additionally, Ferguson ranked 2nd in the conference with 5 assists per game.
Preseason Outlook:
The Flames were picked to finish 3rd in their conference and picked up 4 first place votes behind Wright State and Northern Kentucky.
Last Time Out:
UIC:
UIC fell to a young but athletic Notre Dame squad in their season opener by a score of 84-67. Notre Dame capitalized off the outstanding performance of 5 players who ended the game in double figures. Notre Dame made 36 of 38 free throws to put the game away. On the UIC side, Pre-Season All-Conference selections Marcus Ottey and Tarkus Ferguson added 17 and 12 points respectively.
Radford:
The Highlanders started their title defense with a 91-57 victory over Division II Davis and Elkins. With three players suspended for the opener (Carlik Jones, Devonte Holland, Travis Fields), the Highlanders got extended looks at a few new comers who proved to be welcome additions to the Highlander lineup. Graduate transfer, Mawdo Sallah was outstanding in his debut with 9 points and 5 rebounds. Additionally, Brunswick Community College transfer, Devin Hutchinson added 8 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists. But the real hero in last night’s game was senior Caleb Tanner. With the suspension to Jones, Tanner was given his first ever start at point guard and put on a show from the 3 point line with 6 made three pointers, 19 points, 1 assist and three steals. Additionally pre-season Big South conference honoree, Ed Polite Jr. continued to be a leader for the team with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Donald Hicks chipped in 15 pts, 5 rebounds and 4 assists to round out the trio of double digit scorers.
Common Opponents from last season:
Last season, both teams faced an all too familiar opponent in high stakes games in the Liberty Flames. Radford defeated Liberty in the conference championship off Carlik Jones’ buzzer beater.
UIC dispatched the Liberty in the CIT semifinal game by 16 points to reach the CIT final. UIC put four starters in double figures. Ottey and Ferguson once again were huge with 12 and 16 points a piece.
Prediction:
This is a hard one to call. It’s a prime-time matchup between two teams who are both projected to have very good seasons. That said, I’m going to give both depth and home court advantage to the Highlanders in this one. Expect this one to stay close throughout with the Highlanders pulling away at the end to extend their record to 2-0.
Final Score: Radford wins 72-63
