Breakdown
RU leads the all-time series against the Bulldogs 25-23, but UNCA swept the Highs last season.
UNCA has a plethora of big men, which usually is the kryptonite for the Highlanders. In 7'6 Kenny George and 7'1 CJ Walker, they have tallest tandem in NCAA basketball history. While they can be intimidating forces, they serve as a diversion and a roadblock in the post, forcing teams to kick out for jumpers. They usually only combine for 6 points, 5 rebounds per game.
K.J. Garland is back from injuries and that's not good news for Radford. Garland scored career-high 27 points against RU @ the Dedmon Center in 2003-04 going 5-of-7 from 3-point a range, at a venue where most shooters struggle.
Smithson is their main scoring, coming in averaging 14.9 ppg.
The Bulldogs are last in the league in scoring (65.8), but first in FT% (71%). They do not defend the 3-ball very well (35%), something Radford needs to take advantage of. And believe it or not, they're not the best rebounding team.
The Highs are riding their hot hands - their two seniors - and should look to continue to do so. But, guards Amir Johnson, Kenny Thomas and Martell McDuffy should be waiting behind the 3-point line ready for the ball to get kicked back out for a 3-point attempt. RU can not be intimidated by the prescence of UNCA's big men, because they are there just to block shots and serve as decoys. Radford has shot generally well this season, except for the last game.
RU is tough to beat at home and if they can get back on track and shoot 46-48% from the field, they should be able to win this game and improve to 3-2 in conference play.
