As most know by now everything is over. Really hate RU didn’t get to play in the NIT but it’s life but moving forward what’s everyone thinking about 2020-2021? There’s rumors Coach Jones will take the JMU job if offered. I saw the other day that if he indeed does Florida assistant and Radford native Darris Nichols will be RU’s main target. Also something else I’m not sure anyone else has thought of but since Carlik is a RS Jr so I wonder if he’s on track to graduate and if so will he return to RU or will he transfer to a bigger school near Cincinnati maybe like Xavier? We lose a good bit but losing Carlik would be the big blow.

I've heard similar rumors about Mike Jones. But I'm really hoping 2 things. 1.) He stays as long as his son is on the team and 2.) He holds out for a Power 5 offer. That said, Carlik is on track to graduate as far as I know so, I would say his loyalty to Radford is tied to Mike Jones. If Jones goes, my bet is Carlik goes.

The JMU boards seem to think that Jones to them is close to a done deal but there is a weird delay in the announcement. They dont seem to be excited about Coach Jones and are hoping for a host of other guys. Buncha pompous not a very nice persons complaining about getting the "Radford coach." If I remember correctly, we beat them this year and a few other times recently. Hopefully JMU is holding out for someone else. Im torn because Im sure Coach Jones could possibly double his pay there. I want him to get paid and stay here. Not sure if that can happen. I think Coach really likes it in Radford. JMU possibly has more potential, but we may have an easier path to the dance.
Mike Jones has landed some big time players here. Javonte Green, Ed Polite, and Carlik Jones. I think Keishon Porter is the next one. Hell the guy had a scholarship offer from TExas A&M. Him and Carlik would play this season together and he leaves someone to build upon. If Coach Jones goes, all of that may go up in smoke. I would say that Mike Jones has done an EXCELLENT job at Radford. He has made winning games, that at times seemed impossible, happen on a regular basis. He has beaten Oregon St, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas and Notre Dame. Can you imagine knowing all of those wins would come within a few years, in say 2006? It would be hardly believeable. One Big South tournament champion, and a first four win. Those have all been great times. I would love to see Coach Jones have his best days ahead here, but we will see what happens.

Super glad Lineburg suspended him for a game this year. Great job dummy.

I thought that was a bad move as well. That’s from the outside looking in of course. I don’t know what all the facts were but seemed petty. And I thought Jones has earned enough of a leash to get by with that.

I’m not entirely convinced Coach Jones is the leading candidate for the JMU job. I admit, I probably rationalizing and also hoping. Jones is the perfect fit for Radford, both our school and him, personally. But I wouldn’t for a second condemn him for exploring and accepting a better opportunity. The JMU message board is interesting. Comments from their fans about whom should be their next coach are literally ‘all over the board.’ it’s fascinating that even Ralph Samson is mentioned as a contender for the job. He’s a great guy, certainly qualified, but the JMU message Board has fascinating comments about Sampson, and the overall search for their next coach. csnbbs.com/thread-867451-page-121.htmlI hope one day we have as much commentary volume on our message board as JMU has. Lol.

I hope that is the truth. And yes that JMU message board is a trip. They jus S talk that the idea of the Radford coach getting their job. Their place in mid major basketball isn’t much higher than ours. Yes their conference is better, but they have little history, no noteworthy players, and we have had more success and been more than competitive with them since Coach Jones has been here. We have had way bigger wins since he has been here.
I’m not saying that they aren’t in a better spot than us overall. Because they probably are. But if we had won the Big South last year, and were to pull of an upset in the tourney, Mike Jones would have been one of the hottest names in the country. Now obviously that didn’t happen, but many of the so called experts picked us to be the team to do just that going into the conference tourneys last year.
My main point is if I was a JMU fan, I would like to have Mike Jones as the head coach. One main thing that people overlook is that since he has been here, good players haven’t transferred. He’s beat P5 powers on the road, and sent a player to the NBA. As a Radford or JMU fan, that is somebody I would love to have as the head coach.
I have had a ball and been very proud of the Radford basketball program and there is no guarantee that continues without Mike Jones.

Fantastic news. Coach turned down the opportunity to work in a shiny new gym, and a slight upgrade in competition. I was on pins and needles for a while there, but I really did think he would be wise to stay with us. I had a new dash of hope when I noticed we offered a scholly to a new player I hadn't seen before. Coach has an opportunity now to make a lasting influence on our institution.
Every day I check the transfer portal for Carlik's name, and every day I don't see him listed gives me hope. Next year could be a special year for us, and I'm going to be looking forward to it all summer.
Let's go RU!

Coach Jones said he met with JMU but was not offered the job. I’m personally happy, but JMU doesn't understand talent. I would take coach Jones over JMU’s Georgia Southern hire every time. www.roanoke.com/sports/college/after-meeting-with-mike-jones-jmu-hires-salem-grad-mark/article_994ff0af-8425-5d05-bbe9-0077a0beab28.html

What is everyone’s outlook for next year? We have Carlik, but lost a lot of experience. The guard depth behind him is young, but promising. I’d like to see more out of Butts, Djonkam and Walker. I’d have to guess we may add another grad transfer?
We have some wild cards coming with Mangum and Porter. They could be the difference in an ok season and a great one. Along with the other freshman as well. We could have a star right out of the gate.

Would he have appeared in the transfer portal by now if he intended to transfer? I think he's going to declare for the draft, if that happens this year, for the opportunity to work out with pro's. I'm excited about Porter coming on board, but I'm tempted to think that Xavier Lipscomb might be an even better get. Winthrop is going to be good again next year, it's going to be a major battle with them for supremacy.

I don’t know for sure that we have Carlik. Is him transferring a real possibility as far as is it just speculation or does it have legs? And when you say declare for the draft, do you mean just for the experience and then come back to school? He’s not a serious NBA prospect at this time I wouldn’t think.
Im not sure about the time frame on transferring. If I had to guess I would say he stays. But that’s just because of Jones and history of him keeping the stars around.

Maybe I'm wrong, but don't guys declare for the draft sometimes even when they know they won't get drafted, because they get great quality workouts with teams and such, and then just go back to their schools when they don't get drafted?
As far as him transfering, the Roanoke times article alerted us to the fact that he only needs a couple credits to graduate, and could do a post-grad transfer without sitting out a year. He's a high-major starter at this point. I can't imagine he's not on the radar of assistant coaches at those schools.

I definitely would say it could be a possibility. There is no chatter of it on Twitter. I really see no smoke for it other that the fact that it’s possible. Everyone is different and would have different reasons for staying or going. I hope he stays. We’d have a decent shot at the dance next year and he would be the star of the conference. Can’t say I would blame him for trying somewhere bigger. I honestly don’t know what I would do myself in that situation.
