Players and coaches think they've done a decent job so far of acting excited in public, convincing others they're thrilled simply to be taking part in the tournament, but behind closed doors they'll tell you the play-in game is utterly pointless. "Yeah, yeah, we're excited. It's an NCAA tournament game, bla, bla, bla," said Winthrop coach Randy Peele. "And no disrespect to Middle Arkansas State Pine Bluff, or whoever we're playing, but we already play schools no one has ever heard of. I'm pretty sure most of our own student body didn't even know we had a varsity basketball team, so I doubt this play-in game against another no-name school will peak their interest." Arkansas-Pine Bluff says by taking part in the play-in game, a team is effectively being told it is one of the worst two in the entire tournament. "We were so excited when we won our way into the Big Dance," said one Golden Lions player. "But then we watched the selection show and found out we have to win this stupid play-in game in order to get to the 'real' tournament. Well, technically this game counts as the real tournament, so we're happy, kind of, but really, it's like kissing your sister." Despite the feelings of participating players and coaches, the NCAA Selection Committee says the play-in game is necessary to trim the field down from 65 to a much more manageable 64. "This play-in game is completely necessary to balance out the tournament," said a committee representative. "We need this game to eliminate one team. Without it, we'd have to select a mere 64 teams instead of 65, a number that would just be totally illogical."
