Oh, and PMART had a hell of a game. Yes he fouled out but he had some nice plays. He is a smart player and usually does not make stupid mistakes. Good job tonight PMART! Can we reject the option to shoot free throws and just ask for another posession? I thought P Mart had a pretty strong game as well...grades to come tonight.

And no, I haven't had much sleep the past 3 nights or so which means I'm not into trash talking. Although reading all your cheap shots at our players, school, and announcers during this thread started to get me going! lol I would say good luck the rest of the way, but I wouldn't mean it. Congrats, Manson, on the birth of your future Highlander! Boy or girl? I have an 8 year old and there is nothing better. Enjoy!! As for the comments about Liberty on our site, it pales in comparison to what disgusting comments were written on Liberty's about RU. I'm sure even you'll have to agree. At least ours had a legitimate basis and weren't off track (focused on basketball). Anyway, enjoy your child and get sleep when you can!!

I know Liberty doesn't have academic standards when it comes to admissions this is hilarious! www2.newsadvance.com/lna/sports/college/liberty/article/highlanders_foreign_stars_outshine_flames_home-grown_talent/24193/"After enduring endless taunts from Liberty’s student section Tuesday night, the two key members of Radford’s international brigade gave it right back. Belarusian Art Parakhouski looked at the crowd, smiled, and pointed to the Radford on his red jersey as time ticked away in the Highlanders’ 74-69 victory at the Vines Center. Serbian Lazar Trifunovic joined in the cheers, yelling, “USA! USA! Woo!” at the assembled students, who used the same taunts against the players during the game. Both had plenty to crow about. Parakhouski made it four double-doubles in four tries against the Flames, finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds. And Trifunovic, held in check for the most part in Liberty’s win at Radford in January, scored 13 points, including some key baskets down the stretch as the Highlanders pulled away in a physical, gritty game." So why do I find the "USA" chant so funny? Well, Liberty's second leading scorer last night, Patrick Konan is a citizen of the Ivory Coast. That is pronounced "i-vor Co-ast" if you are a Liberty broadcaster. Moronic fans, taunting the other team for the same international flavor that your team has? I guess what else can you expect from one of the most sheltered places on the planet.

I couldn't believe my ears when the one announcer said Amir had such a great free throw shooting motion. Personally, I haven't seen worse since Wes Unseld! Even his partner disagreed with him. Then, in response to his partner's disagreement, he said "well, it works and that's what counts". NEWS FLASH: AMIR IS A 55% FREE THROW SHOOTER.
Dude, stop while you're behind!!!

Say what you want about Carter, but he's a solid kid. His game is from beyond the arc so those 3's he hit are no fluke. That's our fans' knock on him is we want him to be more of a "banger" on offense. He's been working on it, but it's just not his natural game. If that is McMasters' game, that's not how Dale Layer utilizes him. McMasters has now made exactly 6 three-pointers all season. After his sizzling 2-2 effort last night, he's now a career 32% shooter from long-range. He's made ONE three every FOUR GAMES PLAYED in his career. And I'm sorry, if he chooses to present himself in such a ridiculous way, he better be able to take some heat. He looks like a Chris Anderson wanna-be. It's not original. It says "look at me" the same way a NFL'er does when he dances on the field after a routine tackle. If he plays good basketball, I'll notice him. No need for the get-up. And to claim these two teams are evenly matched is a stretch. Sure, LU won at Dedmon, but Layer admitted that if RU had made just two more threes, it would have been a loss. If the Highlanders had just shot their normal percentage from downtown, it would have been a double-digit win for Radford. RU's problems with Liberty have been defensive: containing the dribble drive and fighting through ball screens. RU did a better job in the second half last night. The Flames shot 37% from the field and 27% from the arc. On the offensive end, when Radford moved the ball, didn't force it into the post or take quick perimeter jumpers, the Highs got easy shots. Liberty will have a tough time defending straight up. And if the Flames pack it in, you're going to have to hope that RU shoots 1-22 from the arc again to win. And finally, the win over Radford was Liberty's ONLY VICTORY OVER THE TOP FIVE TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE. I'm going to attribute your entire post to sleep deprivation. Congratulations on the new baby, though. Parenthood is great. Just wait until you've got three. You have to abandon the man-to-man and go zone. Enjoy!

I could not believe it either. Amir nearly brings the ball behind his head when shooting free throws. Its pretty ugly.

Carter is a Redshirt Freshman. He came out of high school where he played as a wing and was labeled as "avoiding the paint like an infectious disease" or something to that effect. He can shoot the 3 ball. Layer is trying to develop much more of a post game out of him and encourage him to stay near the paint which he has done more and more as the year has gone on.
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts it'd be Christmas every day. Who cares "if you made 2 more 3's" last game. You didn't. Who cares if your only problems with us are "containing the dribble drive and fighting through ball screens. That's who we are, that's what we do. Perhaps that is why you struggled with it during both games we played this year.
Yes our only win against the top 5 (top 4 after Saturday because we WILL beat HPU) was against RU. Perhaps there's a reason for that. I think so. - you're the most predictable and easily scouted team to beat in the league.

I know Carter is a rFR. I've seen his career stats. He's made six threes all season. YOU said his game was behind the arc. That doesn't jibe with his numbers. Are you saying that Layer doesn't use him effectively?
Who care's that "if we made 2 more 3's?" Your coach. Your beat writer Chris Lang said in his blog last night..."and even LU coach Dale Layer noted after that game that the first meeting would have had an entirely different outcome if Radford even hits two or three of those missed 3s." My point being that Liberty didn't defend the 3 in the first game. The majority of those shots were wide open looks. It would be one thing if those shots were contested. They weren't. Layer rolled the dice on that strategy and it paid off. Please, by all means, if the two teams meet at any time during the tournament, feel free to ask Coach Layer to go to that well again.
Of course Radford is easily scouted. My 13-year old daughter knows what Radford's strengths are.
And there is a reason Liberty has only one win against the top 5. The Flames aren't as good as any of those teams.

I think this tough, gritty win vs. LU was just what we needed. Let's face it...we've lost a couple tough, close games (most recently vs Coastal) so it was good to end up on the other side of one, especially on the road.
Maybe the Coastal loss was a blessing in disguise. It's pretty much a lock that they're gonna end up hosting the Big South tourney now, but we've won 15 out of our last 18 road games. You always hear players and analysts of all sports talking about how it's so hard to beat a team 3 times in a row, so maybe the season split makes a potential win in the championship game more likely.
We have to believe. We have the best front court and we're the best rebounding team in the conference hands down. Whenever you have that going for you, you're always going to be in any game.
No team can match up with us. RU is still the team that nobody wants to play come Big South tournament time because of that fact.
Again, we have to believe that we can win this thing and get to the dance, because we're simply the best team. Dread the Red. Let's go Highlander faithful!

Making a few more free throw attempts would help the cause though. We allow too many teams to hang around in games because we leave too many points at the line.

STARTERS
Lazar Trifunovic GRADE 6- Solid game. 13 points and more importantly only 2 turnovers. Joey Lynch-Flohr GRADE 7 - If anything we should have gotten him more looks. 5-7 from the floor and 0 turnovers. Artsiom Parakhouski GRADE 8 - USA USA USA! Amir Johnson GRADE 6- 8 assists and did a good job of running the offense....wish his shot would come around just a little... Blake Smith GRADE 6 - Early foul trouble made him a non factor in the first half but came on with a very strong second half on both ends of the floor.
BENCH
Jeremy Robinson Grade 5 - Thought he played pretty well...distribution could have been a little better. Evan Faulkner Grade 5 - Played well in extended minutes in the first half and had a couple really nice passes mixed in with 1 really bad one. Gorkem Sonmez Grade 5 - Sonmez 1 Ohman 0 Phillip Martin Grade 7 - Played heads up basketball for 20 minutes with some good moves and great decision making.

Steven Baird, your PF recruit for next year is the one who "avoids the paint like an infectious disease" so either Layer thinks that he can convert just about anyone into an inside player or he wants guys who like to play away from the basket.

I have gotten both Baird and McMasters confused over the course of their recruitment. Everything I've read about the 2, lead me to believe they are about the same type of player. Baird is a more highly rated recruit out of HS than Carter was, but I don't care too much about recruit rankings. We'll see what they can do when they get here.
Carter was a McKay recruit, I'm not sure if Layer was in on him when he was here as an assistant.
