Just finished listening to the Radford - Bucknell Baseball game. Radford wins 4-2. That's two in a row with Elon tomorrow. As RUathletics said, let's get on a roll!

Tough loss yesterday. Let's get it back tomorrow when GMU comes to town. I hope there will be a decent crowd even though they are playing in Salem.

RUathletics, yeah I'm a big RU baseball fan and am looking forward to this season. It's been a little difficult transitioning to baseball after being so emotionally invested in RU basketball this year, but it's starting to come back.
I listened to the end of the Elon game on Sunday and, based on Patrick Reed's voice inflection and description of Elon's last at bat, I thought the hit was a routine fly ball. I was shocked to hear it had cleared the fence and the game over. He said Elon's left field fence is markedly short, and in any other park it would have been a routine fly. Oh well, there are 40 other games to listen to this year.
Maybe other forum members will get into baseball and make this a popular topic over the next two months....

Let's keep the posts going and maybe we can get others involved. Have you watched the games via streaming?

Yeah, I watched Radford in all their games in the Big South Tourney last year, including their explosive win over Coastal Carolina. I plan to watch them this year (I have the BSN unlimited package).
I'm a little concerned about their middle relief pitching. Notwithstanding what happened today against George Mason (appears our Starter, Paul DeVito, has some issues early) it seems like we tend to give up more runs after retiring a quality starter for the day in an effort to set up our closers, like Jason Patten.
Will continue to watch them and study them. We may have the tallest pitchers in the big south. At least 3-4 of them are 6'5" or taller I believe. Must be imposing to see a 6'6" or 6'7" pitchers throwing 85 - 90 MPH fastball.

I, too, subscribe to the Edge annual pkg most notably for basketball and baseball. I used to play for the Highs and keep in touch w/Joe Raccuia on RU Baseball.
They are off to a terrible start, unfortunately, and it really puts a damper on the season when we were expected to do so well. We are fully funded and I really like the moves the athletic dept has done to try and put RU at the top of a conference that really is one of the best in the nation. We'll see how it goes. Looking forward to playing UVA. My dad is a UVA alum and we are planning to make the trek from NOVA to Charlottesville for that one.

RUathletics, You said you used to play baseball for the highs. If I may ask, during what years? I was there during the late 80's through ~1995 as I got a couple of advanced degrees from RU. I knew some of the players including a couple I played HS baseball with who ended up walking on at Radford.
I plan to watch RU today vs. Rider. The website says Video will be available, but when you look URL on the link, it is to the game Statistics, not to the BSN video feed. Hopefully there will be video. I'd like to see the throwing form of Butler, and Patten, whom I hope will get another save today or multiple ones over the weekend.

Big sweep of Rider over the weekend! Pitching appeared to be simply awesome! By the way, I hate the live stats we use because it is so sporatic on updates. I find myself hitting the resend key and when it updates we are in the next inning. I wish they'd stream more games (or at least broadcast the audio).
To answer your last question, I played in the early 80's for Radford. It was the "wild, wild west" of RU baseball, then. Great times, great stories.
Anyway, I hope this last series is a showing of things to come for the Highs. The Big South is absolutely loaded this year (last checked, Coastal is 8th in the nation and Chuck South just beat #6 Florida).
March Madness, College and Major League baseball, warm weather, I just love this time of year.
GO HIGHS!!!

I, too, followed the Highs this weekend through the live stats and was also impressed with RU's pitching. I hope this past weekend exemplifies an improving starting rotation and middle relief performances, and not a reflection of the competition. I think that Rider is a good team from what I can tell, so it's probably the former.
You said you played during the "wild, wild west" of RU baseball. I'm very much familiar with that era. Let me drop names, some of which I'm sure you know: Tim Newman, Jay McCraw, Ralph Berrier, Darrin Matthews, and Craig Worrell. I played high school baseball with the last three, though they are older than me by a couple of years. We were all part of the "Carroll County" connection with RU baseball; however, I never made it past fall tryouts my freshman year after coming to the disappointing realization that my arm just wasn't strong enough for D1 as a third baseman, and a punch-and-judy hitter had little to offer the squad. But I continued to follow RU nonetheless and became friends with several of the players.
I would Like to hear some of your stories of the RU Baseball wild wild west sometime. I have a few of my own as told to me by the guys I mentioned above. The baseball team has come a long way since then, but it wouldn't be where it is today without the formation of the baseball club in the early 80's, and without the struggles of the first couple of seasons under Tim and later under Greig Denny. As you said, great times and great stories.
