It should be obvious that I'm an HPU fan and from that point of view I wouldn't want Coach Burgess to leave HPU. I would also want the best for him and his family and RU would do well to make him an offer. As for him coming as an assistant coach, you can forget that, as the coaching staff at HPU is moving that program to national recognition and is probably one recruiting class away from a deep and talented team that will be very competitive for years.

I have to respond to Marv's reply.
I am a hoopsjunkie and have followed Burgess' career as a HS, college player / coach ever since he left the Shenadoah Valley area. This is my 1st time on this message board but I had to respond after reading your reply with incorrect facts. Before you belittle Burgess' recruiting at least get your facts accurate.
He has been around the BSC and is well respected in the coaching profession, but can we fault him for other HC's wanting him on their staff. He does know the BSC as a player he was in the top 10 of scorers and rebounders of all time. His 11yrs as an asst. he has a plethora of recruiting contacts throught not only the region but nationally.
I should not be saying this (DB if you visit this site, excuse me for telling your business but i have to give you your "props") but he was offered a position(s) last yr alone at Wright St. (one he probably is regretting since they are going to the big dance), U. Vermont, JU and i am sure there are others which he has turned down at the mid major level. For hoping to position himself for an opportunity to become a Head Coach at his alma mater in the BSC( which he know well).
Just want to correct you he did recruit Reggie W to VMI along with Fred Robinson and Matt Murrer whom both of these seniors had a good career in the Big South and RW is the nation's leading scorer. You are right he did not recruit Torrey Butler (a BSC player of the Year) but he did coach him. Burgess is an excellent teacher of the game and does a great job of motivating and communicating with his student-athletes. He did recruit Pele Paelay (a BSC Player of the Year) Prior to his stints at at Coastal (2YRS)and VMI (3YRS)(which everyone in the country knows is an excellent school but one of the toughest places to recruit in the nation) he was at the Unvi of Central Florida (4 YRS)where he coached a A-sun Player of the year and New Comer if the year (Mark Jones) along with other all conference and selections at these 3 schools mentioned. He currently is a High Point (2 YRS) no he did not recruit AZ Reid but he has helped coached him into an outstanding player. Also, last year i believe he helped coached the BSC Defensive Player of the Year (Issa Konare). Granted he did not recruit these kids but this is another example of him communicating with and teaching his layers while passing along his knowledge of the game.
RU folks. Your administrators have one of your own alums, in your backyard who would make an outstanding Head Coach. He would get the students, locals, fans back to the Dedmon Ctr but more importantly bring pride back to your basketball program
If he is not wanted at Radford maybe we can get him back home in the shenadoah valley?.

ahoopsjunkie-
Welcome to the board. While reading your response, I pretty much nodded my head agreeing and applauding.
I would love for Burgess to come back and I have no doubt in my mind he would be able to bring recruits, spirit, winning and pride back to Radford.

In addition to all of the above, Don Burgess carries himself with a humble self confidence that is picked up by those around him. He is a gentleman in a bussiness that is not often gentlemanly.

Again this is not a knock on Burgess as a person at all because I've never really met the man but someone answer me this about him and other head coaching gigs...
If he's as valued as some of you claim, then why was Burgess not a finalist for any of the job openings at Coastal, when Strickland got axed. And why didn't VMI hire him instead of plucking Duggar from D2 to replace Bellairs?
He was an assistant at both schools yet they decided to pass on him as a serious candidate when they knew all of these wonderful things about him. And now RU is supposed to hire him because he's a nice guy, a grad, and as ru1985 pointed out, because he played like he would be a good coach someday? Come on boys you have to want more than that from our new head man.
I appreciate the fact that Burgess is well liked and that he has folks defending him for this job but it is my opinion that he would not be the right hire at this time. That's all I'm trying to say! And no one as provided any evidence to counter my thoughts on the matter but hey, that's what this forum is about right? So we can all express our feelings on everything RU hoops whether we agree or not!

You know, Marv, now that I look back on my earlier post, it does seem a bit "touchy feely" when it comes to Burgess's credentials. Not a lot of meat there, just a gut feeling on my part. I guess that stems from me wanting so much more from this program than its been able to deliver over the last five years.
My fear right now? If RU was seriously considering Burgess for the job, why hasn't there been an announcement already? RU is done. So is HP. You have to figure that RU has had all season to target their candidate. Why not pull the trigger and name him already. My guess is that perhaps they are talking to or waiting to talk to coaches from bigger schools that are still playing.

There is absolutely no way a true Highlander would go to such negative lengths to discredit a 'Former Highlander Great'!! 80% of the individuals on the list have no head coaching experience. Greenburg has no Head Coaching experience, yet he has been deemed as overqualified. By the way, Samuels is not a former Highlander player. I'm all for Burgess, Hawkin(former players) or Lilly, Benders(former coaches). They have the experience, energy and knowledge of 'necessary winning components at RU' to not only surpass current B. South leaders, but once again challenge mid-major & majors. Please understand, 'proven head coaches' are still at their respective universities, not looking to simply stay in the business.

Which i think burgess lacks. IMO, before we can have a good team on the court...our administration, directors, etc. need to get their acts together. they cant even agree how to run the school, let alone the mens basketball program.

looks like you can add another name to the list.... Myron Guillory www.roanoke.com/sports/college/wb/109474Radford will talk to Tech assistant RU plans on discussing its men's basketball coaching job with Brad Greenberg this week. By Ray Cox and Mark Berman The Roanoke Times Closed doors, undisclosed locations, shadowy committee figures making life-changing decisions in private: That is an accurate description of the search for a new Radford University men's basketball coach to succeed Byron Samuels, whose contract expires June 30. The administrators at Radford won't say anything about the school's head coaching search, but a brother of one of the candidates did. Virginia Tech men's assistant coach Brad Greenberg, brother of Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg, will be meeting with someone soon at Radford to discuss the position. "He's planning on meeting with them ... this week," Seth Greenberg said Monday. Seth Greenberg said his brother went through "the regular process" and applied for the job some time ago. He said RU hasn't called him for permission to speak to his brother but that RU didn't have to. Brad Greenberg, 53, has been his younger brother's associate head coach at Tech for four years. He previously worked with Seth as the director of basketball operations at South Florida. He has also been an assistant at American University, his alma mater, and St. Joseph's. He was an NBA assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks. He was vice president of player personnel for the Portland Trail Blazers and the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers. Radford president Penelope Kyle has declined comment on the coaching search. All public comment has been handled by the office of university relations. Spokesman Rob Tucker said a search committee has been impaneled to review the 50 or so applications. A group of finalists will then be interviewed by the committee, whose identity is being kept secret. "The committee does not have a hard and fast timetable," Tucker said. News that a search committee was being formed and applications from prospective candidates were being solicited came in January. That announcement came soon after press reports that Brad Greenberg was the leading contender. When Samuels announced his resignation just before the start of the season on Nov. 2, Kyle said in a statement that a national search would begin immediately. The list of coaches known to want a shot at the Radford job has grown to include Colorado State assistant Myron Guillory, a former Virginia Tech player who has coached two years at CSU. "I've sent [Radford] a resume," he said. "With my experience as an assistant at a school in one of the top conferences in the country [Mountain West], I think I have what it takes to turn the situation at Radford around and create a winning atmosphere." Guillory once coached an AAU team in the Boo Williams organization and also served as an assistant coach at Nicholls State. The recruiting coordinator for Colorado State, he said the Rams signed one of the top classes in school history this year. Guillory, a Louisiana native, added that he knew Western Virginia well and also has personal ties to Radford because he had family members who went there. The urgency of Guillory's interest in Radford has increased in the wake of the firing of Colorado State coach Dale Layer earlier this week. Layer had coached there seven years and left with a 103-106 record. Guillory is serving as interim coach. He does not expect to be a candidate for the permanent post but does have hopes of staying on at Colorado State in another capacity. Radford has never hired a head coach away from another Division I school. High Point assistant Don Burgess, one of Radford's best players ever, has applied, but could not be reached for comment. Another applicant, George Mason assistant Scott Cherry, said Thursday he had not been contacted by Radford. Tucker said he did not know whether all the finalists have been contacted by the school.

About time we get this started ... RT: Burgess expects interviewBurgess expects interviewThe former Radford star confirms his old school has contacted him about the vacant basketball job.By Ray Cox Just as one former Radford University player and assistant coach revealed that he hopes to be a candidate for the school's vacant men's basketball head coaching job, another former Highlanders player and coach said he'd been invited to interview. Don Burgess, a standout former player from Harrisonburg and now an assistant coach at High Point, said Tuesday he'd been contacted and expected to be interviewed by the search committee. Burgess started his coaching career at Radford before stops at VMI and Coastal Carolina in addition to High Point. Meanwhile, for the first time it was revealed that another former Highlanders playing great and assistant coach, University of Buffalo assistant Chris Hawkins, said he had applied for the job. Hawkins said Tuesday he's heard nothing from the university. "In 10 years of coaching, I know what it takes to set up the framework for a successful college program," said Hawkins, also a winning head coach at the high school varsity level. "Radford's a great situation and I'd love to have a chance at it. I know I can turn things around down there." Two other known hopefuls, Colorado State interim head coach Myron Guillory and George Mason assistant coach Scott Cherry said Tuesday they'd not heard from Radford. Virginia Tech assistant coach Brad Greenberg will be interviewed this week, his brother Seth Greenberg, the Hokies head coach, said earlier this week. The university has announced no firm timetable to name a coach to replace Byron Samuels, who resigned after five seasons at Radford. "Something could happen this week or next," Radford spokesman Rob Tucker said. Burgess and Hawkins both were interested in the Radford job before Samuels was hired to succeed Ron Bradley. Burgess noted that he recruited both VMI's Reggie Williams, who led the nation in scoring this season, and Matt Murrer. Burgess also helped coach a couple of Big South Conference players of the year in High Point's Arizona Reid and Coastal's Torrey Butler.

im curious to who the 50 applicants were, and if we will get a coach by next week.
even if burgess doesn't get the HC job, i still have a longshot hope that he will still come aboard in some capacity.

here we go, greenberg to radford. article says the press conference will be tomorrow www.dailypress.com/news/dp-now-brad.m22,0,5620759.story?coll=dp-widget-news heres an article from the RT www.roanoke.com/sports/breaking/wb/109884Radford to name Brad Greenberg as new head men's basketball coach
By Ray Cox and Mark Berman Now the only question is, when is that Radford University-Virginia Tech home-and-home men’s basketball series going to start? When and if such a series does begin, it appears it is going to be a brother vs. brother affair. Radford has scheduled a news conference for 3:30 p.m. today in the Dedmon Center to introduce Brad Greenberg as the sixth head coach in school history. Brad Greenberg, a 1977 graduate of American University, is the lead assistant to brother Seth Greenberg on the Virginia Tech coaching staff. According to a Virginia Tech source, who would not speak if identified, Seth Greenberg told Hokies players Wednesday that "there was a very strong possibility" that Brad Greenberg would be named Radford coach. When asked about his brother’s status Thursday afternoon, Seth said, "I can’t tell you. Go with your instinct." Radford officials have kept a tight lid on information about the search to replace Byron Samuels as coach. Nevertheless, Brad Greenberg, 53, was identified as the leading candidate as long ago as January. Brad Greenberg was once the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers. He also worked as an assistant coach at American and St. Joseph’s and as director of basketball operations at South Florida while Seth was the head coach there. It has been widely believed in the coaching community for some time now that the Radford job was Brad Greenberg’s if he wanted it. Among the disappointed candidates for the job were former Radford standout players Don Burgess and Chris Hawkins, both also former Highlanders assistant coaches. Burgess, the only other person known to have interviewed for the job, is an assistant coach at High Point University. Hawkins is an assistant at the University of Buffalo. Others known to have been involved included Colorado State interim coach Myron Guillory, a former Virginia Tech player, and George Mason assistant Scott Cherry.
